How can I see my credit report for free?

Last Modified 16th of February 2021

If you want to work on your credit rating and improve your credit score then checking out your credit report is a great way to start. The best news is that checking your credit report is pretty cheap too.

There are several ways that you can get your credit report. Firstly you have a statutory right to see what information credit referencing agencies hold on you, so by simply writing to them to request a report you will get one.

The downside is that you will have to pay an admin fee of £2, so it’s not totally free. Also by doing this you will not see their analysis or learn your credit score, all it will contain is a simple print out of all the data they hold. This can be tricky to work with and the most help it is likely to be is if you spot a mistake which you can then get corrected.

There are three main credit agencies:

  • Experian
  • Equifax
  • Call Credit

And you should consider getting a report from all three so that you can check for errors. This will of course cost £6 in total.

The Free Option

All of the credit reference agencies do of course offer their own value added services which give you more details and enable you to see your credit score. Of course the credit score you see is just their way of scoring you, and your score with one agency will be different than your score with another. But these services are helpful never the less.

These services cost a monthly subscription, so they are not free, but Experian’s service (“Credit Expert”) offers a 30 day free trial. So if you sign up you can see your report free for one month. After which you will have to pay unless you cancel.
