Where can I get a free online credit score?

Last Modified 16th of February 2021

This depends a lot on which credit score you want. There are at least a handful of different companies who track your credit history and rate you on your credit worthiness. These are known as ‘credit reference agencies’.

There are three main credit reference agencies in the UK:

  • Experian
  • Equifax
  • Call Credit

They all have their own ways of scoring you based on the information that they have available. As a result you have several different credit scores depending on who you ask. And on top of that you will have a credit score with many of the smaller lesser known credit reference agencies too.

The easiest way to get a free online credit score if you don’t have a preference as to which credit reference agency you use is to sign up for Experian – which is free for life, apart from their Credit Expert feature for £14.99 per month (you get a free trial in your first month!).

Other agencies

Experian are the biggest, so seeing their score might be the most worthwhile, but in reality most agencies will give you a score and give you a simple assessment of what that means. So in other words, if you just want to know what information is on your file and whether your overall history is good, bad or ugly then it doesn’t matter which agency you go with.

The actual score is fairly arbitrary for most people – and there are smaller agencies out there who will give you a good idea as to how your overall credit profile is looking in terms you can understand.
