Raising a baby is often the most rewarding experience that a person can go through in his or her lifetime. However, for those who are considering going on the adventure of becoming a parent, it is important to realise that bringing a baby into the world is also a huge responsibility and one that can be very expensive.  If you are wanting to find out what the approximate cost having a baby, there are many considerations you should keep in mind.

Know prenatal costs

Before the baby is even born, you will incur plenty of health and well being expenses along the way to ensure the baby is developing in a healthy manner and that the pregnancy is going as planned. You will also want to make sure you take prenatal vitamins. Good prenatal vitamins cost around £7 – £25 per pack. As you prepare for the baby, you will also want to take a few antenatal classes, especially if it is your first baby. NHS antenatal classes are free, but private antenatal classes range in price from £75 – £250. However, they will help you as you go through childbirth and life with a newborn!

Know the cost of baby items

Before the baby arrives, you will need to prepare for the baby by buying a car seat, a cot, nappies and wipes, a changing table, clothes, a baby monitor and many other necessities. Depending on where you look, you can purchase these items for a much cheaper price on Gumtree and eBay. If you’re hesitant about buying second hand baby items – don’t be! Many parents selling their old baby items have probably only had them for around 6 – 12 months, meaning they’re pretty much new.

Know the costs of keeping your baby health

Once the baby arrives, you will want to make sure you can afford the costs associated with keeping the baby healthy, happy, and ensuring he or she grows up strong. This cost includes the monthly cost of food, nappies, and other necessities during baby’s first few years, which can easily total thousands of pounds. You should plan around £200 a month for these items. A box with 100 nappies usually costs around $15 and usually lasts a few weeks. Remember you will want to take your baby in for check-ups periodically to make sure the baby is developing properly. If you’re on private healthcare this can add up.

While the cost of having a baby may seem daunting, the cost is well worth it. Hopefully, as you plan for the baby, you can prepare by knowing the costs of prenatal care, delivery, baby items and maintaining the baby’s health.
