iPhone vs Android: Is Buying an iPhone Worth the Money?

iPhones are among the most popular smartphones in the UK, but they are also among the most expensive. Whether an iPhone is worth buying depends on how you use your phone and what you value - software consistency, resale value and ecosystem lock-in all matter as much as the headline price.

Short Summary

iPhones tend to hold their resale value better than most Android phones, which partly offsets the higher upfront cost.

Android gives you far more hardware choice at every price point, including flagship-spec phones from Samsung, Google and OnePlus that cost less than an equivalent iPhone.

iOS is tightly optimised for Apple's hardware, making it generally smoother and more consistent than Android across different devices.

Theft is a real risk with iPhones due to their high street value; the cost of insurance should be factored into any comparison.

Are iPhones overpriced compared to Android phones?

iPhones sit at the premium end of the market by design. An iPhone 16 Pro starts at around £999 new, while flagship Android alternatives such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 (from £799) and Google Pixel 9 Pro (from £899) offer comparable - and in some respects superior - specifications for less money.

That said, iPhones retain their value unusually well. A two-year-old iPhone typically sells for 30 to 40 per cent of its original price, compared to 20 to 30 per cent for most Android flagships. If you sell your device when upgrading, the effective cost gap narrows. Over a two-year cycle, the total cost of owning an iPhone may be closer to an Android flagship than the sticker price suggests.

Is iOS or Android a better operating system?

Neither is definitively better; it depends on your priorities. iOS is exclusive to Apple hardware, so it is finely tuned for the iPhone's specific screen, processor and camera. This tight integration produces a consistent, smooth experience with minimal crashes or compatibility issues.

Android, being open source, runs across hundreds of devices with very different specifications. This means the experience varies significantly by manufacturer and device. A Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra running the latest version of Android is excellent; a budget Android phone running an older or heavily customised version is a different experience entirely.

Apple also commits to longer software support. As of 2025, Apple supports iPhones for six to seven years with full iOS updates. Most Android manufacturers offer three to four years of guaranteed updates, though Google's Pixel phones now promise seven years.

Does it matter that iPhones get stolen more often?

Yes, and the financial impact is real. iPhones are a high-value target for thieves precisely because they are desirable and easy to resell. According to Metropolitan Police data, phone theft in London is disproportionately focused on Apple devices.

Gadget insurance for an iPhone 16 Pro typically costs £12 to £20 per month, adding £144 to £240 per year to the total cost of ownership. Factor this into your budget before deciding. Some home contents insurance policies include accidental loss and theft for mobile phones; check yours before buying separate cover.

What are the advantages of iPhone that Android cannot match?

Three areas stand out. First, privacy: Apple's App Store has stricter controls on data collection than the Google Play Store, and iOS gives users more granular control over app permissions. Second, iMessage and FaceTime work seamlessly when everyone in your circle uses Apple devices - though this matters less if your contacts use WhatsApp. Third, the Apple ecosystem (iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods) integrates more smoothly if you already own other Apple products.

What do you get with Android that iPhone does not offer?

More flexibility, generally at a lower price. Android phones from Samsung, Google and OnePlus often match or beat the iPhone on camera hardware, display technology and charging speed. Many Android phones include features Apple still does not offer, such as reverse wireless charging, expandable storage and foldable screens.

Android also offers more choice at mid-range prices. The Google Pixel 9a and Samsung Galaxy A55 both deliver excellent cameras and software at around £400 to £500 - roughly half the cost of an iPhone 16 Pro.

Is an iPhone worth the money in 2026?

For most people who value simplicity, long software support and good resale value, yes - though only if you can afford it without going into debt. If you are budget-conscious, mid-range Android phones such as the Google Pixel 9a or Samsung Galaxy A55 deliver excellent cameras and performance at half the price.

How long does Apple support iPhones with software updates?

Apple currently supports iPhones for six to seven years after launch. The iPhone 16 series, launched in September 2024, should receive iOS updates until at least 2030 to 2031. This long support cycle is one of the strongest arguments for choosing an iPhone over many Android alternatives.

Is it cheaper to buy an iPhone on contract or outright?

Buying outright and using a SIM-only plan is almost always cheaper over 24 months. Network contracts bundle device repayments into a monthly fee that often carries an effective interest rate of 10 to 30 per cent APR. Compare the total contract cost against the handset price plus a SIM-only deal from Tesco Mobile, giffgaff or Smarty before signing.

What is the best way to insure an iPhone? Check your home contents insurance first - many policies from Aviva, Direct Line and Halifax include mobile phone cover. If yours does not, dedicated gadget insurance from Protect Your Bubble or Switched On Insurance typically costs less than cover offered directly by Apple (AppleCare+). Always read the excess carefully before buying.

Do iPhones hold their value better than Android phones? Yes, generally. iPhones retain resale value better than most Android phones. An iPhone 15 Pro bought in September 2023 for around £1,000 was still selling for £550 to £650 on eBay in late 2024. A comparable Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra launched at a similar price but typically sold for £350 to £450 over the same period.
