How UK Income Tax is Calculated
Personal Allowance (£12,570)
The first £12,570 of your earnings is free from income tax. This is tapered for incomes over £100,000 and is fully removed at £125,140. Pension contributions can bring your income back below the taper threshold.
Tax Bands (2024/25)
You pay 20% on income between £12,571 and £50,270. Between £50,271 and £125,140 you pay 40%. Above £125,140 the additional rate of 45% applies. Scotland has different rates and bands.
National Insurance
Employees pay 8% NI on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% on earnings above that. NI is calculated on your gross salary, not your pension-adjusted salary (unless salary sacrifice is used).
Pension & Student Loan
Pension contributions (via relief at source or net pay) reduce your taxable income. Student loan repayments are calculated as a percentage of earnings above your plan threshold and are collected via PAYE alongside tax and NI.
